Binaural Factors in Auditory Continuity

چکیده

Auditory continuity is a powerful illusion which has implications for the efficient coding of sound. Although auditory continuity has been studied extensively as a monaural phenomenon, there have been few reports of the influence of binaural factors. Hartmann [1] and Kashino & Warren [2] report that when a tone alternates with a noise, the continuity threshold of the tone is lower when the tone and noise differ in their interaural timing. Here we aconfirm the binaural contribution to continuity continuity using Huggins pitch [3]. We alternate a Huggins-pitch noise (target) with a negative-phase Schroeder complex (inducer) and find that pulsation thresholds are lower when listeners judge continuity of the pitch percept within the Huggins noise, than when they judge continuity of the no ise itself. We also demonstrate that binaural continuity is determined by the relative ITDs of the targe and inducer rather than by their perceived spatial positions and introduce a simple model to account for our findings, which assumes that the tone is heard as pulsating if there is a detectable dip in the output of either of three channels: two monaural [4] and one binaural channel.

بررسی تأثیر اوتیت میانی مزمن بر پردازش مرکزی شنوایی کودکان

Introduction & Objective: Conductive hearing loss following otitis media (OM) attenuates and delays sound passing through the middle ear. This may impair central auditory functions (such as binaural hearing) and lead to central impairments that persist after the peripheral loss has resolved. This study investigated the effects of chronic otitis media (COM) on central auditory function in chil...

Influences of spatial cues on grouping and understanding sound

Spatial cues such as interaural time and level differences often have such a weak influence on auditory grouping that they are overwhelmed when opposed by other cues, such as common onset or continuity. In reverberant listening conditions, spatial cues provide relatively little benefit when understanding a sound source in the presence of competing noise. Yet everyday experience shows that liste...

Chapter 5 Binaural Sound Localization

We listen to speech (as well as to other sounds) with two ears, and it is quite remarkable how well we can separate and selectively attend to individual sound sources in a cluttered acoustical environment. In fact, the familiar term ‘cocktail party processing’ was coined in an early study of how the binaural system enables us to selectively attend to individual conversations when many are prese...

Development of functional organization of the pallid bat auditory cortex.

The primary auditory cortex is characterized by a tonotopic map and a clustered organization of binaural properties. The factors involved in the development of overlain representation of these two properties are unclear. We addressed this issue in the auditory cortex of the pallid bat. The adult pallid bat cortex contains a systematic relationship between best frequency (BF) and binaural proper...

مدل میکروسکوپی دوگوشی مبتنی بر فیلتر بانک مدولاسیون برای پیش گویی قابلیت فهم گفتار در افراد دارای شنوایی عادی

In this study, a binaural microscopic model for the prediction of speech intelligibility based on the modulation filter bank is introduced. So far, the spectral criteria such as the STI and SII or other analytical methods have been used in the binaural models to determine the binaural intelligibility. In the proposed model, unlike all models of binaural intelligibility prediction, an automatic ...
